The basal body temperature test is a useful test of thyroid function. Your body temperature reflects your metabolic rate, which is largely determined by the hormones secreted by the thyroid gland.
To measure your basal metabolic rate: -
- Shake down the thermometer and place it by your bed before you go to sleep.
- On waking place the thermometer in your armpit for a full 10 minutes. It is important that you move as little as possible.
- After 10 minutes, read and record the temperature and date.
- Record the temperature for at least three consecutive mornings, preferably at the same time of day.
- Menstruating women must perform the test on the second, third and fourth day of menstruation.
- Men and non-menstruating women can perform the test at any time.
- Normal body temperature is 36.5 C + or - 0.2 C / 97.6 F - 98.2 F.
- Low basal body temperatures are quite common and may reflect hypothyroidism.
- High body temperatures are less common and may require further investigation.
