There are a variety of signs and symptoms some of the most common are: -
- Inability to decrease weight regardless of decreasing food intake or increasing exercise.
- This is often one of the most upsetting symptoms for the person. They will say they are doing the right thing and despite all their efforts the only change they get in their weight is often an increase. The person may even comment that they have no real appetite.
- Fatigue, tiredness, lethargy, apathy. The person will say they just don't have the energy to do anything. Muscle weakness and cramps may also occur and some consider that there is a link between hypothyroidism and carpal tunnel syndrome.
- Depression - some say that they are not sure which comes first - depression or hypothyroidism, they frequently go hand in hand.
- Sleepiness, and wanting to sleep more and more. They will wake up tire and go through the day exhausted and wanting to sleep more.
- Cold extremities - some to the extent of having Raynaud's phenomena. But partners will often complain about the person's hands and feet being really cold. They may even change colour.
- Fluid retention is often a symptom especially around the eye and eyelid area. Lymphatic congestion may also show up with puffiness around legs especially ankles.
- As metabolism is affected this can affect the heart and the heart beat may be slow, and they may also suffer from hypertension (high blood pressure) and higher than expected cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
- Dry hair and skin and nails that are thin and brittle. The person may also talk about hair loss and they also may have difficulty growing the hair in their eyebrows. People will often comment that their hairdresser thought there was something wrong with them and they should go and get things checked out. Perms will not hold in people's hair and their hair will often be dry, course and brittle. Skin conditions that are dry and flaky are often found as well, such as eczema or psoriasis.
- Period and hormonal problems are another common finding. These may include mild to severe breast tenderness, fibrocystic breast disease, ovarian cysts, PMS, prolonged and heavy periods, frequent periods, lack of libido. Infertility is another common finding, with those who do become pregnant having a higher than normal rate of miscarriage and other pregnancy complications.
- Difficulty concentrating, poor memory, forgetfulness, brain fog and difficulty thinking straight may all be symptoms found in the person who is hypothyroid.
- The person will frequently complain of sore throats, sinus infections, recurring ear infections, and being susceptible to colds, infections and allergies. They may also find that their breathing is laboured and difficult.
- They may or may not develop a goiter - which is swelling of the thyroid gland and this may affect their speech which may become slow and monotonous, and their voice deepen.
