What can you do?

First if you suspect you may be suffering from hypothyroidism please check your Basal Metabolic Rate (details are earlier). This will give you and / or your health care provider something to work with, and a reference to see what effect any treatment may be having.

Zinc, Vitamin A and Vitamin E function together in many body processes, including the manufacture of thyroid hormones. A deficiency in any of these nutrients can result in lower levels of active thyroid hormone being produced. These nutrients all assist with immune response.

The B group vitamins and vitamin C are also necessary for normal thyroid hormone manufacture.

Increase intake of essential fatty acids as these assist with proper functioning of the thyroid gland. Keep low your intake of other oils, and where possible avoid flax (linseed), soybean, safflower, corn or canola oils.

Protein is important especially fish. Fish has an especially beneficial effect on the thyroid gland.

Increase intake of kelp and foods rich in iodine such as kelp, seaweed, artichokes, onions and garlic. Other thyroid stimulating foods include radishes, watercress, seafood, egg yolks, wheat germ, brewer's yeast, mushrooms, watermelon, tropical fruits and coconut.

Avoid sugar and refined carbohydrates. Also avoid stimulants such as tea and coffee. These just make our systems work harder and if we have hypothyroidism it is already struggling enough.

Avoid chlorine and fluoride, as these are chemically related to iodine and can block iodine receptors, resulting in a reduction in iodine containing hormone production and finally in hypothyroidism. Make sure you drink plenty of filtered water. This is especially important if you are suffering from any fluid retention.

Eat foods that are goitrogens in moderation, if symptoms are severe they need to be avoided. See above for list of foods.

Exercise helps stimulate the thyroid gland and our metabolism, as well as helping energy levels and our state of well being. If you have not exercised for a while please start slowly and you may find it easiest and motivating to go for a walk with a friend.

In many countries raw glandular thyroid extract is used in the treatment of hypothyroidism.

Selenium and Glutathione both assist the conversion of T4 to T3.

Check spinal alignment. Your spine feeds all your nerves which can affect your whole body and how it functions.

The Consultation

I have a special interest in hypothyroidism and as a result it is an area that I have researched extensively.

In my consultations with clients I see a large percentage who are suffering from thyroid related issues - many of whom do not realize that this is affecting their life and well being.

A consultation may be scheduled in person.

Those who are able to attend an in person consultation can either email or phone me for an appointment.

Foods to Avoid

The ingestion of food known as goitrogens blocks iodine utilization. Goitrogens include: -

  • Turnips
  • Cabbage
  • Mustard
  • Cassava root
  • Soybeans
  • Peanuts
  • Pine nuts
  • Millet

Cooking usually inactivates the goitrogens. Unsaturated fats such as flax, soybean, safflower, corn and canola also should be avoided.

Iodine and Tyrosine

Thyroid hormones are made from iodine and the amino acid tyrosine. A deficiency of iodine results in the development of a goiter, an enlarged thyroid gland. When the level of the iodine is low in the diet and blood, it causes the cells of the thyroid gland to become quite large due to pituitary stimulation by TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone).

Iodine deficiency reduced with the introduction of iodised salt, however now that many people avoid salt this is no longer a useful item to fortify with iodine. When iodine was added to table salt in Michigan in 1924 the rate of goiter was reduced by 47%.

Basal Metabolic Temperature

The basal body temperature test is a useful test of thyroid function. Your body temperature reflects your metabolic rate, which is largely determined by the hormones secreted by the thyroid gland.

To measure your basal metabolic rate: -

  • Shake down the thermometer and place it by your bed before you go to sleep.
  • On waking place the thermometer in your armpit for a full 10 minutes. It is important that you move as little as possible.
  • After 10 minutes, read and record the temperature and date.
  • Record the temperature for at least three consecutive mornings, preferably at the same time of day.
    • Menstruating women must perform the test on the second, third and fourth day of menstruation.
    • Men and non-menstruating women can perform the test at any time.
  • Normal body temperature is 36.5 C + or - 0.2 C / 97.6 F - 98.2 F.
    • Low basal body temperatures are quite common and may reflect hypothyroidism.
    • High body temperatures are less common and may require further investigation.

Why are so Many Affected by Hypothyroidism?

Radiation is probably the greatest environmental cause of hypothyroidism and thyroid problems. Fluoride is another contributing factor and synthetic and genetically engineered hormones such as oestrogen found in meats, dairy, poultry and eggs, as well as hormone replacement therapy and the oral contraceptive pill all block the release of thyroid hormone.

Excessive consumption of polyunsaturated fats and excess iodine are also thyroid inhibitors. However insufficient iodine may also contribute to the problem. Mercury also has an effect on the thyroid. It poisons an enzyme critical in converting inactive form of the thyroid hormone (T4), into the active hormone (T3).

The Thyroid gland is also linked into the Throat C hakra and as such it is influenced by our ability to communicate and express ourselves.

Walnut (Essence)

One of my favourite Bach Flower Essences; Walnut is great for all times of change and for protection. When looking at a walnut it looks similar to the brain and so it is great to use when we have to make a brain decision but our heart may get in the way. The hard shell that surrounds the walnut is also symbolic of the protection that Walnut essence can give us.

Nat Mur (Tissue Salt)

This is a tissue salt or a Schussler cell salt.  Cell salts are the components our body and cells are made of - a lack of one of the twelve tissue or cell salts can lead to disease in the body.

Nat Mur is an amazing tissue salt (made from common table salt) it has a large number of uses as a tissue salt as opposed to a food additive.
