First if you suspect you may be suffering from hypothyroidism please check your Basal Metabolic Rate (details are earlier). This will give you and / or your health care provider something to work with, and a reference to see what effect any treatment may be having.

Zinc, Vitamin A and Vitamin E function together in many body processes, including the manufacture of thyroid hormones. A deficiency in any of these nutrients can result in lower levels of active thyroid hormone being produced. These nutrients all assist with immune response.

The B group vitamins and vitamin C are also necessary for normal thyroid hormone manufacture.

Increase intake of essential fatty acids as these assist with proper functioning of the thyroid gland. Keep low your intake of other oils, and where possible avoid flax (linseed), soybean, safflower, corn or canola oils.

Protein is important especially fish. Fish has an especially beneficial effect on the thyroid gland.

Increase intake of kelp and foods rich in iodine such as kelp, seaweed, artichokes, onions and garlic. Other thyroid stimulating foods include radishes, watercress, seafood, egg yolks, wheat germ, brewer's yeast, mushrooms, watermelon, tropical fruits and coconut.

Avoid sugar and refined carbohydrates. Also avoid stimulants such as tea and coffee. These just make our systems work harder and if we have hypothyroidism it is already struggling enough.

Avoid chlorine and fluoride, as these are chemically related to iodine and can block iodine receptors, resulting in a reduction in iodine containing hormone production and finally in hypothyroidism. Make sure you drink plenty of filtered water. This is especially important if you are suffering from any fluid retention.

Eat foods that are goitrogens in moderation, if symptoms are severe they need to be avoided. See above for list of foods.

Exercise helps stimulate the thyroid gland and our metabolism, as well as helping energy levels and our state of well being. If you have not exercised for a while please start slowly and you may find it easiest and motivating to go for a walk with a friend.

In many countries raw glandular thyroid extract is used in the treatment of hypothyroidism.

Selenium and Glutathione both assist the conversion of T4 to T3.

Check spinal alignment. Your spine feeds all your nerves which can affect your whole body and how it functions.

Find a good Doctor or Naturopath who has experience in this area to tailor a program for you.
